The Peace Corps Act - September 22, 1961
On March 1, 1961, President Kennedy signed the executive order establishing the Peace Corps. On September 22, 1961, Congress approved the legislation that formally authorized the Peace Corps. Goals of the Peace Corps included: 1) helping the people of interested countries and areas meet their needs for trained workers; 2) helping promote a better understanding of Americans in countries where volunteers served; and 3) helping promote a better understanding of peoples of other nations on the part of Americans.

August 25 - Liberation of Paris
After an uprising by the French Resistance and days of street fighting, Paris was liberated by Allied forces from the Germans on August 25, 1944.
On August 19, 1812, the USS Constitution earned its venerable nickname “Old Ironsides” when it defeated the HMS Guerriere in a renowned engagement during the War of 1812.

The Constitution is a gorgeous ship - I was lucky enough to see it sail in Boston on the 4th of July a few years back.
Richard M. Nixon’s Resignation Letter, 08/09/1974
Following the revelations stemming from the investigation of the Watergate break-in, President Richard M. Nixon resigned the Presidency in this letter dated August 9, 1974. The President’s resignation letter is addressed to the Secretary of State, in keeping with a law passed by Congress in 1792. The letter became effective when Secretary of State Henry Kissinger initialed it at 11:35 a.m.
